Creative Sense 2: Replacement icons for the Adobe Creative Suite icons.

Written descriptions of all the icons from this set are available at [link]

The download includes icons for both Mac OS X and Windows.

Icons are available those illustrated, except for Adobe Premiere. The 3D models used for much of the base art were lost in a computer upgrade and so I've chosen to release the icons now. That silhouetted icon there? That would have been Premiere.

There are some pretty major differences between these icons and the original set, including specifically redrawn 32px and 16px art. Colours are improved and many details were reworked to help with readability. All the fine detail in the 128px and greater icons are secondary; each icon was considered first and foremost for use at smaller sizes, with silhouette shapes being a major factor.

Mac OS X icons are provided in CandyBar's iContainer format as well as separate ICNS files with copyable thumbnails. Windows icons are provided as ICOs.

Mac OS X icons include sizes at 512, 256, 128, 32 and 16 pixels. Windows icons include 256, 48, 32 and 16 pixels.

As always, these are provided free for your personal use. Enjoy!

Hey Mike,

I really like these icons, and the corresponding folders. Although I have no use for Creative Suite, I still use several of them on my Mac. (Your Illustrator icon is gorgeous, and I use it for Pixelmator; and the InDesign icon is used on Skim. Hopefully I can make something half as good-looking as the sample pages one day. :))

I notice on your home page that the banner says “Creative Sense 3.0”, with the long-awaited Premiere Pro icon (which would be an iMovie replacement for me). Are we going to get these any time soon? :)

Thanks,

— Alex

Whilst it's true that I had begun work on version three, it's stalled as I haven't had as much time lately to work on them. The main goals for v3 was to redraw (again) the smallest of icons where I've identified improvements could be made, and to recreate the Premiere icon.

What's seen in v3 is a work in progress of that icon; I haven't finished modelling it yet. It's been really hard trying to recreate the rigging setup I'd created for the icons with the camera, lighting, materials and shaders etc.

There's also been a bit of a shift in design from going crazy customising the OS (either OS X or Windows) and just using stock. People, myself included, wonder what people are thinking when their desktop has a custom cursor on it, for example. I guess a lot of that early crazy experimentation of the 90s and early 00s is giving way to somewhat homogenous stability.

So for now it's on hold again - but maybe one day :)

Glad you've enjoyed the icons!

There's 512px art in the Mac ICNS files. You're welcome to extract them if you want, there's programs that can do that for both Mac and Windows. As a general rule, I don't distribute PNG files of my icons.

Haha, I know, I know... Haven't had much time to do 3D modelling at present, as I've taken on a few new jobs. It's still on the To Do list, promise! ;)

I'd say that they had a different set of priorities. I'm not a fan of coloured letter boxes, so I made these as an alternative. But I'm sure Adobe are happy with their icons.

Yeah, I suppose. But they have taken the time to make a new (although very similar) set of icons with every CS release.

They're absolutely amazing. This exactly what I've been looking for - a version of Adobe icons to go with apple's fantastic icons. I can't believe it took me so long to find them. They're amazing. I just have critique. I'd like to mention that these icons fit a lot better into a horizontal dock than my current vertical one. They look sort of cramped when they're put adjacent to each other vertically. I realize you probably won't be making any adjustments because of the loss of your files, but it's just a thought.

Anyway, I'm begging you to put your talents into making a new set of Microsoft Office Icons. As you know they share the same problem that Adobe's new icons have and I'm on the verge of replacing them with iWork's icons. I know you have the talent and I think if you made a replacement set it would be amazing.

Thanks for your feedback. I have to admit I don't use my dock sideways, though just testing it they are packed pretty close. Probably because there's less vertical real-estate than there is horizontal (good thing there's auto-hide!). I wouldn't be surprised if the OS X dock is actually deliberately cropping in the icons so it can pack them as densely as possible.

I've thought about doing some Office replacements (both the upcoming Mac and Windows versions of Office have unpleasant single-letter icons), but it's taking me long enough to get the remaining Premiere icon up to scratch, so it'd be a longer while still before even considering such a project ;)

Thanks for the reply. The reason I have my dock on the side is because I think with most applications (such as web browsing) space on the bottom is more useful than space on the side. However, I'm using a 13" laptop and perhaps with a bigger screen this wouldn't be so important. I'm also glad to hear you've considered redesigning the Office icons and I hope you have time after you're done with Premiere. (Too bad about loosing all those 3D models)

I tried my dock on the side just to see how it looked; I agree that it does seem quite tight. Not much I can do about that. other than maybe make a set that's rotated 90 degrees ;)

I'm making slow progress with Premiere, because it's such a complex object to model (even with simplifying the model from its source inspiration). It is frustrating that I lost the models (well, all my modelling and not just for the icons), but I guess that's life.

Anyway, time to be productive!

Man, I have been looking all over for a CS4 icon replacement set that DOESN'T have the same boring "letters in a colored shape" formula... These are just pure icon GOLD!!

Now they don't stick out like 5 sore thumbs on my dock! Thank you so much!!
